What does it mean when instructions tell you to BURN the ISO to a DVD relating to torrent downloads?

i tried a blank CD but it didnt have enough space what does it mean to burn it to a DVD like do i use any actual DVD? or a blank DVD and if its a blank DVD how would i get it? anyway i could use household items like a flashdrive or something?

ISO file is a image of a cd/dvd. So you will have to burn it to a cd/dvd to use it. (There are ways to use it without burning it to a cd/dvd too).

Materials needed:

1. Blank DVD
2. Capable DVD burner
3. Burning software (such as Nero)

Follow software instructions about selecting the file u want to burn. Place disc in drive and burn it. Usually if u get a good software program, the instructions are easy and intuitive. Yes you need a blank DVD, some torrents ask for a DL DVD. This is just a DVD disc that has twice the capacity and requires a special burning drive. BTW, you do not need to burn the DVD like most torrents say.

A Better Method:
Use a program like Daemon tools (free), MagicIso, or PowerIso to mount the .iso file. Daemon tools works best IMO and is free. These programs create a “virtual” DVD drive and trick the computer into thinking you put the .iso file into a CD drive. It works the exact same as burning a disc except that its quicker and doesnt use a DVD. Daemon tools installs easy, is easy to use, and i use it.

Advanced Method:
I use this method :). Use Winrar archiver to unpack the .iso. Unpack it to a folder. Run the setup.exe (or whatever starts the program install if u are dealing with software). This method is more difficult. I suggest starting with the second method.

First of all, downloading torrents is VERRRRRY dangerous. And it’s wrong. And it’s illegal. As a developer, I think you should stop and pay your dues to the people who worked their butts off to bring you computer software and just pay for it. So long as it’s not made by Microsoft, it should be reasonably priced. Most software is very appropriately priced.

Plus, when you download a torrent, you are downloading a HUGE executable file from someone you don’t even know who could be from Hon Kong or Timbuktu, and it could be very dangerous software. Could be malware or a real bad virus.

Why chance it?

YES, that is exactly what it means, you use a DVD drive that can write/burn DVD’s and a software package which can do the job and you use the correct kind of media, CD or DVD that is called for. MOST DVD drives that are also burners come with the software you need. Mine came with a copy of NERO BURNING, a decent all purpose burner package. You buy blank CD’s and DVD’s at your local computer supply store or office supply store such as Staples, Office Depot, Costco. Blank media is sold in many places. In my local Safeway, there is a section of an aisle rented out to Staples or Office Depot, I forget which, where they have blank DVD and CD media. As for software, if you want a different program, you can try doing a keyword search at http://www.tucows.com or http://www.download.com for CD DVD BURN WRITE ISO or some such group of keywords. Both sites have a wealth of FREE and shareware programs available. You will likely come up with several programs which might be suitable. While you are at it, look for MOUNT ISO CD IMAGE. You are looking for a program such as MAGICISO (which I use along with MAGICDISK) which can deal with the file in the same manner as if it was an actually CD in a drive. MagicISO and MAGICDISK treat the ISO file as a “virtual” CD drive. Also, there are archive programs like WINRAR which can “open” the ISO image as if it was an archive and extract the contents as if you had copied the files from an actual CD. WINRAR is NOT free, but they do have a free demo which can be used to extract the files. When extracting files, you can literally put them anywhere you please, local hard disk in a folder or a USB drive or whatever you have free disk space. If you can store files there, you can extract files there.

Now, for what another said about torrents and them being a bad thing… WRONG. Torrents are simply a way of peer to peer file sharing and have absolutely nothing to do with the content, so simply using torrents to download a file is NOT wrong, NOT illegal, NOT bad. The CONTENT may be something copyrighted and therefore illegal, but simply using bittorent as a means of sharing files is NOT illegal. Bear in mind what IS illegal, making available and downloading copyrighted materials, no matter how you do it. I inadvertently shared a ISO file (a backup I legally made of a CD I own) via a peer to peer network and they found me! My ISP got the letter and they passed it on to me. So, it isn’t IF they will find you, it is WHEN.
